I’m 100% in favor of serving a mission if you can. It will feel like a sacrifice, but it will end up being the best investment of your life. However, we can’t have young men and women who wholeheartedly felt at home in the Church for 18 or 19 years, suddenly feel unwelcome or unwanted or uncomfortable when they don’t serve a mission or don’t serve their entire anticipated time. No homecoming talk in church or reporting to the high council? What?! No, no. Don’t scar a young person. They won’t recover emotionally for years if we don’t treat them with love, friendship, and complete acceptance.
