Gratitude

Does gratitude only bless the receiver or could it bless the giver as well?

Recently I was discussing with my classes here at BYU the story of Jesus and the 10 lepers. We decided that the one leper who returned to the Savior to express gratitude probably wasn't the only one of the ten who felt gratitude. They all likely felt grateful, but he was the only one who took the time and effort to go to the Lord and thank him vocally. That seemed to be the difference between being cleansed (Luke 17:14) and being made whole (Luke 17:19). Merely feeling grateful is not enough to change our character. When we take the time to express thanks to our family, friends, teachers, leaders, and especially when we take the time to thank our Heavenly Parents and our Savior, something changes inside of us. Expressing gratitude takes us from the surface level (being cleansed) to a deeper more permanent and fundamental change in our nature (being made whole). It takes time, effort, and humility, but it is well worth the price.

Be courageous in your gratitude!
