Mourn With Those Who Mourn

If we are careful we can discern when someone is mourning and needs us to mourn with them or when they “stand in need of comfort.” Mourning with someone is different than comforting someone. To mourn with someone we must listen to them so closely we begin to see what they see and feel what they feel. To mourn with means we validate, sit by, and cry with someone. No need to offer solutions or advice. Simply mourn with them. When “Jesus wept” he knew Lazarus would live again soon. Yet He was able to put aside His own feelings, plans, and agenda and mourn with His friends. We can be like Him. We can give the gift of listening, validation, and tears.
