I always caution my students to recognize the difference between repentance and shaming yourself. Repentance involves humility, but not self degradation. Our past decisions may cause us pain, but repentance should give us an optimistic outlook of the future. Repentance brings an increase of the Holy Ghost into our lives and the Holy Ghost gives us access to the Savior’s glorious Atonement.
